Day 1 (March 13)

9:00 am to Noon

This plenary will focus on structure and format, creating documents that will persuade the reader from the first glance.  Transforming motions with strong aesthetics, headers, introductions, sequencing and conclusions will be a goal for the morning session.

1:30-3:30 pm

The focus of the afternoon will be developing high-level persuasive reasoning, with an eye toward moral foundations in creating stronger, more persuasive arguments and advocacy.

Day 2 (March 14)

9:00 am to Noon

The morning session will switch the focus to storytelling.  Development of characters and action with coherence and clarity will be emphasized while remaining dedicated to telling concise stories with purpose.

1:30-3:00 pm          

Office hours.  Participants will have an opportunity to meet with Jay and Colin to review their own specific projects and receive feedback on submissions.  Times for office hours will be assigned prior to arrival on Friday.

SUBMISSIONS:

Participants will be encouraged to submit substantive writing projects a week in advance for review.  These submissions will be reviewed prior to the presentations to pinpoint writing challenges unique to the group.  If submissions are not received, the presenters will pull submissions using ECF.

The Office of the Federal Public Defender nationally recognizes David Merchant as an expert in BOP policy and procedure. He is a perennial favorite at conferences around the country, and we are happy to welcome him to Denver.  David will provide insight into how the Bureau of Prison works, particularly regarding placement and classification, as well how they take and process information received from the court, clients and counsel.

With an eye toward improving advocacy, the presentation will include information on what to include and not to include in presentence reports, best methods for providing information to BOP, and how to effectively communicate the needs of clients to the bureaucrats in charge.  Dave will explore common misperceptions and confusion and answer questions you may have about your client actually doing time.

Tips for Preventing Voucher Payment Delays and Reductions

Thank you to Cari Waters, Case Budgeting Attorney for the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, for sharing the attached document with our panel.  Her work with the Judges on the circuit and within the districts, particularly budgeting in the District of Kansas, has given her insight into how to best provide detail to ensure swift and certain payment of your vouchers.  It is our hope that these tips will be helpful as you submit your own vouchers.
